This painting is No. 2 and is part of a series called Streaming Evolution. The painting is ever-evolving, with layers building upon each other in a cycle of non-form and form, creation and destruction. It talks about itself, telling the viewer its history through masked-out windows in its layers. The painting is inspired by cognitive science and models of consciousness, particularly those that explore self-referential structures. Its creation is as much the subject as the contents within it.

The painting explores many questions as it unfolds. One in particular is, “What makes art human?” Every step of its creation is painted directly on the surface, from preliminary sketches to color and texture studies. Created in the streets of NYC and the Carnegie Hill neighborhood, the painting’s contents are shaped by the internal thoughts of the artist as well as the external environment and thoughts of passersby. The layering becomes a process of call and response, with every messy human decision and alteration captured.

Through its evolution, this painting has become multiple paintings layered on top of each other. The evolution will continue until it is purchased. The buyer plays an important role, as they have the choice to stop the painting’s evolution and preserve it in its current state. They also have the option to continue the evolution at a later date, if desired.
